House & Family History: Located approximately two miles from the ruins of 13th century Inverlochy Castle, after which it was named, Inverlochy is a grand 19th century Scots Baronial pile. Former president of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis came to Inverlochy after losing the U.S. Civil War. During a visit to Balmoral in 1873, Queen Victoria spent a week at Inverlochy and declared it the loveliest spot she had ever seen. It was from Inverlochy Castle in 1883 that the official delegation that established one of the world's first weather stations/observatories started out. It was to Ben Nevis that they marched in drenching rain; the first 20 years' worth of readings from that weather station still provide the most comprehensive set of data on mountain weather in Great Britain. The House has been a hotel since 1969.
