Hursley House (Hursley Park)

  • Earlier Houses: There was an earlier house of the Cromwell family on the site of the current house.

House & Family History: In 1712, after the death of Richard Cromwell, the lord protector's son, Thomas Heathcote purchased the Hursley Estate from the Cromwell family and built a new house on the site, possibly incorporating elements of the earlier house. In the churchyard of Hursley, in front of the Heathcote Mausoleum, is the grave of John Keble, the vicar of Hursley from 1835 until 1866. Keble was also one of the founders of the Oxford Movement. It was in his honor that Keble College, Oxford, was named.

  • Chapel & Church: Richard Cromwell is buried in the old church crypt at Hursley, together with the remains of other Parliamentarian families.
