Built / Designed For: F. Potts
House & Family History: F. Potts, agent to the 1st Duke of Westminster, pulled down an earlier 16th century house and erected the large house of 1875 he called Horsley Hall. Between 1907 and 1912 P. Ashworth enlarged the House in the Jacobethan style, making Horsley one of the largest houses ever built in Wales, famous for its lavish interiors. During World War II the Horsley Estate was taken over by the army. The House was demolished in 1963.
Collections: The contents of Horsley Hall were auctioned April 9-17, 1934.
Garden & Outbuildings: The terraced gardens added by P. Ashworth 1907-12 were further improved by Lord Wavertree, circa 1917. Until 1978 there stood in the garden a gateway from a house in Great Buckingham Street, London, were Peter the Great once stayed (now destroyed). Mr. Ashworth also added a large swimming pool in the early 20th century.
