Hope Castle (Blayney Castle)

    House & Family History: From 1900 until 1904 Hope Castle was the home of the 1st Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (Queen Victoria's son), commander of British Forces in Ireland. Between 1919 and 1921 the castle was used by the British government as a military barracks during the Irish War of Independence. From 1932 until 1937 Hope Castle served as Monaghan County Hospital. In 1942 the house was repurposed as a Franciscan convent, a use it served until the 1970s. For the first part of the 21st century Hope Castle was a hotel, a use that ended in 2010, when the house was seriously damaged by fire.

    Collections: During the ownership of Henry Thomas Hope in the mid-19th century, Hope Castle (a name given to Blayney Castle by H.T. Hope), the house was the home of the famous Hope Diamond (see "Images" section), the largest deep blue diamond in the world. The contents of the castle were sold in 1926.
