The house from a circa 1912 postcard
Earlier Houses: There was at least one earlier house on, or near, the site of the current house.
Built / Designed For: Andrew Chamber
House & Family History: Honing is a red brick, five-bay house built to the designs of an unknown architect for Norwich weaver Andrew Chamber in the mid-18th century. Sir John Soane created plans between 1788 and 1792 for apsed ends to the hall and the dining room in the northwest section of house; these were never implemented, but a two-and-a-half story, three-bay bow was added to west facade, probably to Soane's designs. The two-story, five-bay service wing was added in the 19th century. There has been speculation in literary circles that Honing Hall was the inspiration for Ridling Thorpe Manor, the ancestral home of Hilton Cubitt, in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1905 Sherlock Holmes story "The Adventure of the Dancing Men". This is, of course, because Honing is the ancestral home of the Cubitt family.
Garden & Outbuildings: Humphry Repton landscaped the park in 1792; his Red Book remains in the library at Honing. The coach house and Grade II-listed 1884 single story stableblock are extant.
