Hintlesham Hall

  • Built / Designed For: Timperley family

House & Family History: Hintlesham is an Elizabethan E-shaped house that had, post-1720, a Georgian front added that has resulted in a house of two stories with a parapet, hipped roof, and quoins. The first floor Drawing Room is noted for its fine late 17th century plasterwork ceiling, which is very similar to plasterwork at Felbrigg and Melton Constable, both Norfolk houses. The early Georgian two-story Saloon (formerly the Entrance Hall) has fine wood paneling, apsed ends, and monumental doorcases. The North Wing features a circa 1690 staircase. In the 20th century, before Hintlesham became a hotel, it was the venue for a musical festival.

Collections: Thomas Gainsborough's "Heneage Lloyd and His Sister, Lucy," circa 1748-50, that once hung at Hintlesham, is today in the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
