Hillingdon House (Hillingdon Place)

  • Earlier Houses: The first house on the site was a hunting lodge built in 1717 by the Duke of Schomberg. This house, altered and greatly enlarged in the 18th century, was destroyed by fire and replaced by the current Soane-style house (the second house) in 1844.

House & Family History: The British government purchased Hillingdon House in 1915 for use as a military hospital. Later it became the headquarters for No. 11 Group RAF and RAF Bomber Command. Under plans approved in early 2011 for redevelopment, the house is to be renovated and converted to include a restaurant. As of late 2019, the redevelopment remains unfinished and Hillingdon remains closed to the public.
