House & Family History: The Greyfriars Estate was established in 1896 by the American playwright Julian Sturgis, who commissioned the leading Arts and Crafts architect, C.F.A. Voysey, to build a mansion house for a spectacular setting in the Surrey Hills (twenty sheets of Voysey's detailed drawings are now in the collection of the Royal Institute of British Architects at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London).
Comments: Greyfriars is frequently cited as Voysey's masterpiece.
