Gregynog Hall

  • House & Family History: In 1920 Gwendoline and Margaret Davies founded at Gregynog Hall an arts center for Wales. They also used the House for music festivals that were patronized by Edgar Elgar and Ralph Vaughan-Williams, among others. Gregynog Hall was donated to the University of Wales by Margaret Davies in 1960 (her sister had died in 1951).

Collections: The Davies sisters formed an internationally important collection of art at Gregynog; it was particularly strong in the Impressionists and featured works by Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Pissarro, and Rodin, among others. The collection of 260 works was bequeathed to the National Museum of Wales in 1963 (Margaret Davies' death).
