Goldsborough Hall

  • Built / Designed For: Sir Richard Hutton

House & Family History: Colonel Robert Byerley owned a very rare Turkish stallion who famously retired to a life of stud at Goldsborough (the horse was also a war hero—he saved Byerley's life at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690). This stallion is essential to Thoroughbred horse history—he was the first of three stallions from which all of the Thoroughbreds in the world today originate. At his death in 1703 he was supposedly buried beneath a tree in the grounds of Goldsborough Hall.

Collections: A set of 14 Neoclassical dining chairs manufactured by Thomas Chippendale for Goldsborough Hall are today in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The mahogany chairs are upholstered in red morocco leather and were designed by Robert Adam circa 1772. The set, which originally comprised 15 chairs, remained at Goldsborough until 1929, when it was moved to Harewood House. The chairs were sold from Harewood in 1976; the Met purchased the set in 1996. Chippendale made a similar set for Lansdowne House that has not survived.
