The house from a circa 1905 postcard
Earlier Houses: There was probably an earlier house on, or near, the site of the current house.
Built / Designed For: Thomas Lister
House & Family History: The interiors of Gisburne Park are noted for their very fine Baroque plasterwork by the Italian stuccadori Quadri, Artari, and Francesco Vassalli. The circa 1800 additions include a lovely double-story circular room with a domed plaster ceiling and curved doors. In 1985 Gisburne Park was let to a company that converted the house into an independent private hospital and rehabilitation center. In 1995 the house was sold to BMI and reopened as BMI Gisburne Park Hospital. In 2021 the hospital closed and the house was sold to Amber and Guy Hindley, who had owned the estate since 2003. The Hindleys plan to convert the house into a hotel and wellness center.
Collections: A painting entitled "Lunardi, the Balloonist, at Windsor" was once in the collection of Lord Ribblesdale at Gisburne. It later entered the collection of the Crane family of Chicago and was attributed to Johann Zoffany when it was sold by Parke-Bernet in the 1950 sale of the contents of Castle Hill, the Crane's summer house in Ipswich, Massachusetts. The painting is today in a private American collection.
Garden & Outbuildings: The house sits within a 1,000-acre estate that is home to Ribblesdale Holiday Park.
