Foxwold (Foxwold Chase)

  • Built / Designed For: Horace Noble Pym

House & Family History: Foxwold is a classic late Victorian Arts & Crafts style country house. Built of Flemish bond with sandstone window dressings, the asymmetrical house even retains its William Morris wallpaper. Foxwold was the family home of Roland Pym (1911-2006), the noted theater designer, landscape artist, muralist, and book illustrator (his 2004 book, "The Kentish Scene: Pages from the Brasted Diary," is a lovely compendium of his work that shows the influence of Rex Whistler).

  • Garden & Outbuildings: The house is surrounded by 205 acres of gardens laid out in 1912. The famous nude bathing scene from the 1986 film "A Room With a View" was filmed in the estate woodland in a pond constructed for the movie. The woodland was badly damaged by the fierce storm of October 1987, during which the man-made pond was destroyed.
