Notes: Benson was one of the primary promoters of the Palladian style of architecture in 18th century Britain. In 1718 he succeeded Sir Christopher Wren as Surveyor-General of the King's Works and hired Colen Campbell as his deputy (they had a close professional relationship throughout their lives). Benson and Colen Campbell are believed to have conceived a plan to pull down the old Houses of Parliament and replace them with a Palladian style building designed by them. Benson designed Wilbury Park in the Jonesian style for himself.
