Finborough Hall (Great Finborough Hall)

  • Earlier Houses: An earlier house on the site was the seat of the Wollaston family.

Built / Designed For: Roger Pettiward

House & Family History: Finborough is notable for its dome and the Entrance Façade colonnade of large Tuscan columns. The Pettiward family, for whom the House was built, lived at Finborough until the mid-1930s, when the Eastern Electricity Board purchased the House. After the Electricity Board vacated, Finborough became the home of St. George's School, a purpose it continues to serve today as Finborough School.

Collections: A portrait of William Wollaston, circa 1758-59, by Thomas Gainsborough is today in the collection of Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich (Ipswich Borough Council Museums and Galleries). William Hogarth's "The Wollaston Family," of 1730, is today on loan to the Leicester City Art Gallery.
