Built / Designed For: The Rev. Bowyer Adderley
House & Family History: Fillongley is a fine Neoclassical house designed by George Woolcott for The Rev. Bowyer Adderley, uncle of the 1st Lord Norton. George Eliot is known to have stayed at Bede Cottage, which is adjacent to the House; the cottage is reported to have been a source of inspiration for Eliot's novel "Adam Bede." Fillongley remained in the Norton family until 2006, when the 8th Lord Norton sold the Estate for £5 million and moved, together with his family, to Switzerland.
Collections: On October 24, 2006 the contents of Chanter's House, Devon, were auctioned onsite by Sotheby's; included in the sale were 100 lots from Fillongley Hall.
Comments: Fillongley Hall has been called "one of the great unsung interiors of the Greek revival in England."
Garden & Outbuildings: The House sits within an Estate of 400 acres, which includes woodlands, an entrance lodge, four cottages, and a cricket pitch.
