Farnley Hall

  • House & Family History: Walter Fawkes of Farnley was a patron of Turner; many interior and exterior paintings of Farnley were executed by Turner during his visits to the estate; numerous works by Turner were in the collection at Farnley until the late 20th century.

    Collections: Farnley contains an important collection of relics of the English Civil War, including Cromwell's sword and hat, and Fairfax's sword. J.M.W. Turner's "Book of Birds" was sold to the Leeds City Art Gallery on September 1984. Numerous works by Turner were in the collection at Farnley until the late 20th century. "Lady Hamilton as Nature," by George Romney, 1788, once in the collection at Farnley Hall, is today in The Frick Collection.
