Earlier Houses: The current house replaced earlier castle and palace buildings that dated from the 12th century.
Built / Designed For: James IV and James V of Scotland
House & Family History: Falkland Palace was used as the home and hunting lodge for eight Stuart monarchs, including Mary, Queen of Scots. Most of the palace was burned by Cromwell's troops in 1654.
Collections: Falkland contains an important collection of portraits of the Stuart monarchs.
Comments: Clive Aslet, writing in "Landmarks of Britain: The Five Hundred Places that Made Our History," says James V, in the 16th century, turned Falkland Palace "into the most architecturally sophisticated residence in the British Isles."
Garden & Outbuildings: The Royal Tennis Court, believed to be the world's oldest, is still in use. Percy Cane designed the gardens between 1947 and 1952.
