Exbury House

  • Earlier Houses: The current house is built on the site of the kitchen garden an earlier, probably Medieval, house.

    House & Family History: During World War II Exbury was requisitioned by the Admiralty and used as a headquarters for the administration of the feeding, arming, and training of the landing craft crews that were used on D-Day in 1944. The house is noted for its two-story music room.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: The internationally acclaimed soprano Charlotte de Rothschild grew up at Exbury among the internationally famous 200-acre gardens created by her grandfather, Lionel de Rothschild. Charlotte's father, Edmund de Rothschild, named two hybrid rhododendrons Charlotte de Rothschild in honor of his daughter.
