An 1829 engraving of the house from "Neale's Views of Seats"
Built / Designed For: Matthew Wilson
House & Family History: Eshton was designed by George Webster of Kendal for Matthew Wilson in the Elizabethan style. The Wilson family employed Webster to design dozens of houses for them. Eshton Hall was a nursing home in the latter part of the 20th century. In 2002 (the same year a number of chimneypieces were stolen from the house) planning permission was granted for the conversion of Eshton into 13 flats, with five cottages in the grounds. (We are grateful to Colin Stansfield for this history of Eshton).
