Elvetham Hall

  • Earlier Houses: A medieval house burned in 1840 and was replaced in 1860 by the current house. In 1591 Queen Elizabeth I stayed for three nights and four days at the medieval Elvetham to show her displeasure with the Earl of Hertford (who then owned Elvetham) for marrying a woman with a rival claim to the English throne (having the queen and her entourage to stay was ruinously expensive).
