Edzell Castle

  • Earlier Houses: There was an earlier timber motte-and-bailey castle (the mound of which is still visible today) near the site of the current house.

    Built / Designed For: David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford.

    House & Family History: Mary, Queen of Scots, convened a council meeting at Edzell Castle in 1562, during her northbound march against the Gordons.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: The Renaissance walled garden, known for its intricate relief carvings, is unique in Scotland. It supposedly has references to Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry.

  • Past Seat / Home of: SEATED AT EARLIER HOUSE: Abbott (Abbe) family, 13th century. Stirling family, 14th century. SEATED AT CURRENT HOUSE: David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford, until 1558; Sir David Lindsay of Edzell, Lord Edzell, until 1610; Lindsay family here until 1715. James Maule, 4th Earl of Panmure, early 18th century. George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie, 1782-87.
