House & Family History: Dunham Massey Hall was used as a military hospital during World War I. On July 17, 1946 Roger Grey, 10th and last Earl of Stamford, hosted King George VI and Queen Elizabeth for lunch at the house. Dunham Massey Hall, and the surrounding estate, was donated to the National Trust by the 10th Earl in 1976.
Collections: Dunham Massey contains a fine collection of Huguenot silver and the noted painting "A Dutch Mastiff with Dunham Massey in the Background" by Jan Wyck. A pair of silver wall sconces, originally part of a set of six commissioned by the 2nd Earl of Warrington (of the first creation), has been, since 1991, in the collection of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The sconces were made in London circa 1730-31 by Peter Archambo I and feature heart-shaped backplates with mythological scenes, one of which shows the death of Phaeton and the other the story of Narcissus and Echo.
