Donibristle House (Donibristle Castle)

  • Earlier Houses: An earlier house on the site of the current house burned in 1592.

Built / Designed For: Charles Stuart, 6th Earl of Moray.

House & Family History: On February 7, 1592 George Gordon, 1st Marquess of Huntly, attacked and burned the first Donibristle House and murdered its owner, James Stewart, 2nd Earl of Moray, with whom he'd been quarrelling. This infamous incident is remembered in the ballad "The Bonnie Earl O'Moray." In the 1990s the main block of the second house, which had burned 1858, was rebuilt and reunited with the surviving wings of Donibristle House as part of the redevelopment of the House into flats.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: During the Great War the Donibristle Estate was used by the Royal Naval Air Service as an airfield, a purpose it served again in World War II. Beginning in 1962, the airfield and the rest of the Estate, was developed as Dalgety Bay, a privately-funded new town.
