House & Family History: Desmond Castle was attacked by Oliver Cromwell’s forces in 1645. Much of the castle was demolished in the 18th century, followed by an early 19th century restoration of the remaining elements. The castle was burned by the IRA on August 8, 1922, during the Irish Civil War. In 1990 come into the ownership of the Office of Public Works.
