House & Family History: Derrynane was the home of Eileen O'Connell, author of the 1773 poem "Dirge of Art O'Leary," and Daniel O'Connell, the 19th century leader of the struggle for Catholic Emancipation known as "The Liberator."
Comments: Derrynane is considered the best surviving example of an 18th century Irish big house of a Gaelic Catholic family.
Garden & Outbuildings: The house sits within a 320-acre park.
Chapel & Church: In 1844, to celebrate his release from prison, Daniel O'Connell built a new chapel modeled on the ruined monastery chapel of Ahamore Abbey.
