Derby House (23 Grosvenor Square)

  • House & Family History: In 1851 the lease of Derby House was sold by the 14th Earl of Derby to Elizabeth, Dowager Duchess of Cleveland (widow of the 1st Duke of Cleveland); upon her death in 1861 the house was purchased by the developer Sir Charles Freake, who demolished Derby House in 1862 and replaced it with a new house (possibly designed by Francis William Tasker). Renumbered as 26 Grosvenor Square, the second house was demolished in 1957 to make way for Eero Saarinen's American Embassy.
