Denton Manor (Denton House)

  • Earlier Houses: There were two earlier houses on the site of the 19th century house (the subject of this record): a 17th century house and an 18th century house.

Built / Designed For: Sir William Welby-Gregory, 4th Bt.

House & Family History: A number of houses have occupied this site; a small wing of the 17th century house survives and is the core of the current 20th century Denton House. The 18th century house was replaced in 1883 by a large pile -- Denton Manor -- designed in the Tudor style by Sir Arthur Blomfield (the house that is the subject of this record). In 1939 this house was demolished and replaced by the present house, designed by Peter Foster and Marshal Sissons. A fine painting by Sir Frank Dicksee showing Sir William Welby-Gregory, 4th Bt., and his wife Victoria, the only daughter of the Earl of Wharncliffe, inspecting the drawings and model for Denton Manor is now at Denton House.

House Replaced By: The 1883 house (the subject of this record) was demolished in 1939 and replaced by the current house, designed by Sissons and Foster.
