The remains of the house from a 1784 engraving
House & Family History: Edward III founded a new priory, dedicated to St. Mary and St. Margaret, here circa 1349. The priory was dissolved in the 1530s by Henry VIII as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries and its buildings converted into a private house that the king later granted to Anne of Cleves, his fourth wife, as part of her divorce settlement. Anne, who lived here for seven years, often entertained the Princesses Mary and Elizabeth (later Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I, who also later made it one of her residences).
