House & Family History: George Crawley, who tenanted the moated Crowhurst Place from 1907 until 1910, had just designed (in 1906) Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island, perhaps the finest Restoration house in America, for John Shaffer Phipps, who inherited a fortune formed through the creation of the United States Steel Corporation. In 2020 Crowhurst Place was listed for sale for £6 million.
