Coleorton Hall (Cole Orton Hall)

  • Earlier Houses: There were two earlier houses on, or near, the site of the current house.

Built / Designed For: Sir George Beaumont, 7th Bt.

House & Family History: Sir George Beaumont (1753-1827) was an important supporter of the writers of his day. Coleridge, Wordsworth, Southey, and Sir Walter Scott were all friends. Wordsworth wrote a number of poems at Coleorton Hall, while Scott began his great historical novel "Ivanhoe" during a stay here. Sir George was also a major patron of the arts who gifted his important art collection to The National Gallery, an institution he helped found.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: In 1812 Sir George Beaumont, 7th Bt., erected in the grounds of Coleorton a cenotaph to the memory of Sir Joshua Reynolds, whom Sir George believed to be the most important painter of the 18th century. The Grade II-listed structure, which is carved with inscriptions commemorating Reynolds written by William Wordsworth, is flanked by terms capped with busts of Raphael and Michaelangelo. Between 1833 and 1836 John Constable painted the cenotaph in a dark woodland setting. The oil painting, "Cenotaph to the Memory of Sir Joshua Reynolds," is today in the collection of the National Gallery, London.
