A drawing of the house from the Aug 27, 1904 issue of "The Builder"
Built / Designed For: Sir John Horsey
House & Family History: Most of Clifton House was demolished in 1786, which was when elements of the house were sold and re-erected elsewhere, including at Montacute and Hinton St. George. In the early 20th century Bernard Firth moved Georgian chimneypieces from Clifton to Coats Manor (today Bledisole House), another of his seats.
Garden & Outbuildings: The gatehouse and clock tower were moved from Clifton Maybank and re-erected at Hinton St. George, Somerset, in the late 18th century. The grounds of Compton House, Dorset, contain a pinnacle from Clifton Maybank.
