House & Family History: Chillington is an Elizabethan house of Kentish ragstone and brick with Portland stone lions at the entryway. The timber-framed building in the north wing was originally the south wing of Court Lodge, East Farleigh, which was re-erected here in 1874. The House was acquired by the Maidstone Corporation and opened to the public in 1858 as the Charles Museum, later renamed Maidstone Museum. It was one of the first museums be opened as a result of the British Parliament's Museums Act of 1845.
