Cheswick House

  • Built / Designed For: Robert Crossman

House & Family History: Cheswick was built for Robert Crossman (1803-83), owner of the noted Berwick brewery Mann, Crossman and Paulin. Robert's eldest son, William Crossman (1830-1901), was an enthusiastic archaeologist and performed major excavations of Holy Island Priory. The Cheswick Estate remained in the ownership of the Crossman family until 2002, when it was purchased by Peter and Jean Bennett, who renovated and restored the House and opened it for luxury accommodation. In 2012 the Bennetts listed the House, together with 30 acres, for sale for £2.25 million.

Collections: The contens of Cheswick House were sold October 3, 2001 by Christie's.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: At its height in the late 19th century, the Cheswick Estate covered 2,000 acres and included most of Holy Island and the surrounding farmland.
