Champneys

  • Earlier Houses: An earlier mansion on the site was demolished circa 1874 and replaced by the current house.

Built / Designed For: Valpy family

House & Family History: The current Champneys was built in the late 19th century by the Valpy family and extended in 1900 by the Rothschilds. In December 1925 the Champneys Estate was purchased by the naturopath Stanley Lief (with the help of his patient, Mr. C.M. Trelawney Irving) and turned into a nature cure resort. In 1963 Lief died, resulting in a decline in Champneys. In the 1970s the House was completely refurbished. In 2004-07 a further £14 million refurbishment to Champneys Health Spa extended the Garden Wing and added a pool and gym.
