A 1793 engraving of the house before it was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 19th century. From "Angus's Views of Seats." By kind permission of a private collection.
The house from a circa 1906 postcard
Earlier Houses: There were probably a number of earlier houses on, or near, the site of the current house.
House & Family History: Chalfont began life as an Elizabethan manor house (though there were probably even earlier elements); in the 1750s it was rebuilt in the Strawberry Hill Gothic style. In 1791 the estate was purchased by Thomas Hibbert (1744-1819), who returned from Jamaica in 1780 with a fortune made in the West Indies. Hibbert hired John Nash to transformed the house, which he did in the early 19th century (Hibbert also commissioned a number of watercolor views of the Chalfont Estate from Thomas Girtin; most of these are today in private collections; however, Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery has in its collection a circa 1800 Girtin watercolor of Chalfont Lodge, which was designed by Nash). In the 1830s Anthony Salvin rebuilt Chalfont again, this time in the Gothic style.
