Built / Designed For: William de Albini II, Earl of Sussex and Lord of Rising
House & Family History: Though partially roofed today, Castle Rising was ruinous by the mid-16th century, when the main floor collapsed.
Comments: Historic England says that the castle's keep "... is a particularly fine example of a variant type known as a hall keep..."
Chapel & Church: On the grounds, directly adjacent to the castle, are the remains of an 11th century church. Very likely built by Odo, Bishop of Bayeux and Earl of Kent, the building was probably the local parish church until the 12th century, when the current St. Lawrence Church was built nearby. It appears that the 11th century church was later repurposed as part of the castle's outbuildings and was in use until the 16th century.
