From an early 20th century postcard
Earlier Houses: The current house incorporates parts of an earlier house on the site.
Built / Designed For: Lt. Col. Robert Howard
House & Family History: The 2nd Earl of Wicklow built Castle Howard for his brother, Lt. Col. Robert Howard, to the designs of Sir Richard Morrison, who was charged with creating a building that combined two very different styles: a castle and an abbey. The most prominent feature is the three-story tower, which gives the house a very definite castle air. The interior is noted for its fine brass-banistered spiral staircase. The Irish lawyer Ivor Fitzpatrick purchased the House and 200 acres for £400,000 in 1991. Castle Howard is just a few miles from the village of Avoca, the setting for the TV series "Ballykissangel."
Garden & Outbuildings: The garden features the ruin of an old Norman castle, Roman busts, box hedges, and colonnades. In the grounds is the Castle Howard Equestrian Centre.
