He was appointed head gardener to Sir Nathaniel Curzon at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire, and only left that post when he was pushed out by Robert Adam, who insisted on taking over responsibility for the entire management of the grounds. Reportedly a pupil of Capability Brown, Emes himself took on John Webb (a former pupil) as his partner.
