The House from a 1903 postcard
Earlier Houses: There was very likely at least one earlier building on the site of the 16th century house.
Built / Designed For: John Leche IX
House & Family History: Carden Park was a large half-timbered house built for the Leche family. In the early 19th century restoration work was carried out for John Hurlestone Leche, whose family occupied the house continuously from its erection until its destruction by fire in 1912. In 2004 a hotel, completed at a cost of £8.5 million, was erected on the site of the 16th century house that is the focus of this record.
House Replaced By: An early 21st century hotel today occupies the site.
Garden & Outbuildings: Extant are the Ice House, the Stables, and various lodges, all of the early 19th century. Of note is Carden Lodge, built as a classical triumphal arch and Clutton Lodge, a French Neoclassical building with a low dome and pepperpots. There are two golf courses on the Estate, one of which was designed by Jack Nicklaus.
