Calwich Abbey (Calwich Priory)

  • Earlier Houses: The site of the 19th century house was originally occupied by a medieval Augustinian priory dedicated to St. Margaret; this priory was dissolved in 1532, during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and converted into a private home (the first house) by the Fleetwood family. In the 18th century Bernard Granville demolished the earlier house and built a new house (the second house) nearby. During the time of the Granville family Calwich hosted visits by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Erasmus Darwin, and George Frideric Handel. The second house was demolished in the 1840s by the Duncombe family, who built the third house on higher ground between 1849 and 1850. This house was demolished in 1927.

House & Family History: In June of 2015 the Calwich Abbey Estate was sold to Garrick Sayers for £2 million.
