House & Family History: One of the highest country houses in Britain, Burwarton sits at an extraordinary 780 feet above sea level on the slopes of the Brown Clee Hill, enjoying splendid views from within its well-timbered park. The house was a seat of the Holland family, whose heiress in the middle of the 18th century married into the Baugh family. In turn, Harriet, daughter of Benjamin Baugh, married the 6th Viscount Boyne of Stackallen, taking the Burwarton Estate to that family in 1807. Two generations of the Boynes rebuilt the house between 1835 and 1839, and then again in 1876-77, on each occasion using the architect Anthony Salvin, with the result that the house today is a colossus—a stuccoed Italianate mansion sprawling around a central tower. The Boyne family also inherited Brancepeth Castle in County Durham, but, by the middle years of the 20th century they consolidated their holdings of land to be seated solely at Burwarton. As a result, the house at Burwarton was also brought to heel, with a radical reduction undertaken in 1956 by the 10th Viscount, using the architects Philip Skelcher and Partners. Although much smaller, Burwarton today still includes the great library, with its handsome chimneypiece from Brancepeth (see "Images" section), the paneled drawing room, and the dining room, the latter of which is half its former size. The house still forms the nucleus of a forward-thinking estate and is today the home of the 11th Viscount and Viscountess Boyne and their family.
