Burnt Norton (Norton House)

  • House & Family History: A 1741 fire burned down Norton House's Keyte family extensions; it was this fire that prompted the name change to Burnt Norton. The House and gardens of Burnt Norton famously inspired T.S. Eliot to write "Burnt Norton," the first poem of his "Four Quartets," published in 1936 as "Collected Poems 1909–1935." Eliot wrote the poem during a visit to Burnt Norton while working on his play "Murder in the Cathedral."
