Buchanan Castle (Buchanan House) (Buchanan Auld House)

  • Earlier Houses: An earlier house, Buchanan Auld House, burned in 1850 and was replaced by the current (ruinous) house.

    Built / Designed For: James Graham, 4th Duke of Montrose

    House & Family History: Buchanan Castle became a hotel in 1925. The house was converted into a military hospital during World War II, during which time Rudolf Hess was treated here after his plane crash-landed on May 10, 1941 at Floors Farm, Eaglesham, south of Glasgow.
