Bothal Castle

  • House & Family History: The big Gatehouse tower, the oldest surviving part of the Castle, was built circa 1343 by Robert Bertram soon after he obtained a license to crenellate. In 1830-31 the Gatehouse was restored as a house, with the West Wing added circa 1858 and then extended in 1909.
