House & Family History: In 1567 Borthwick was the refuge of Mary, Queen of Scots, and the Earl of Bothwell after the murder of Darnley; after her hiding place was discovered, Mary is said to have escaped from Borthwick dressed as a man. The castle was besieged by Oliver Cromwell in 1650.
