Bolebroke Castle (Bolebrooke)

  • House & Family History: The remaining bit of Bolebroke is a substantial fragment of a 15th century brick house (the earliest brick building in Sussex), which includes the east façade. The chapel at Buckhurst Park contains oak paneling removed from Bolebroke. Henry VIII used Bolebroke when he went hunting for wild boar and venison in nearby Ashdown Forest. Anne Boleyn, who lived five miles away at Hever Castle, was courted by Henry from Bolebroke. The house is near the village of Hartfield, which was made famous by Pooh Bear. In 2020 the castle, together with 27 acres, was listed for sale for £1,650,000.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: There is an extant gatehouse with polygonal turrets topped with ogee caps.
