Built / Designed For: 4th Earl of Egremont
House & Family History: The Italianate style Blackborough House originally contained a suite of rooms that were built to resemble the cabin of the 4th Earl of Egremont's sloop. Since the death of the 4th Earl in the mid-19th century Blackborough has suffered a rash of indignities: it was the local rectory, a school, a home for vagrants, a Quaker retreat center, a youth hostel, and, in the 1950s it became a scrapyard, after which it was abandoned. At the end of 2020 the ruinous Blackborough House was listed for sale for £400,000.
