Bickleigh Castle (Bickleigh Manor House)

  • House & Family History: The great fortified manor house of Sir Henry Carew was destroyed during the Civil War. Before it was demolished by Parliamentarian troops, Queen Henrietta Maria lived at Bickleigh Castle (she fled for France after she received the news that Fairfax's Parliamentarian troops were approaching). Sir Henry was not allowed to rebuild; however, he was allowed to restore the large 15th century Gatehouse (which still stands and is Grade I-listed) and the thatched farmhouse. The Gatehouse, together with 35 acres, was listed for sale in April 2003 for £2 million.

  • Chapel & Church: The small Chapel, built between 1090 and 1110, is believed to be the oldest complete building in Devon.
