House & Family History: The Belsay Estate was first recorded as being owned by the Middleton family in 1270; they occupied the castle until 1817, when they moved to the new, nearby Greek Revival Belsay Hall. The oldest part of ruined castle is the tower of circa 1460; the unfortified range was added in 1614; a further addition, counter-balancing the tower, was added in 1711 (now mostly demolished).
Garden & Outbuildings: The stableblock is extant.
