Barnwell Manor (The Manor) (Barnwell Castle)

  • Earlier Houses: Near the house are the ruins of Medieval, Grade I-listed Barnwell Castle, which was abandoned when the Montagu family moved into the new Barnwell Manor.

    House & Family History: The Barnwell Estate was granted to the Montagu family in 1540 by King Henry VIII; the Montagus remained seated here until 1913. In 1938 Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the third son of King George V, purchased Barnwell. In January of 1995 Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, son of Prince Henry, let the house for seven years to Berenger Antiques (he continued to manage the larger estate). As of 2022, the house is occupied by Windsor House Antiques.

    Collections: Sotheby's sold the contents in 2002.
